PhD student

I was born in a small Dai ethnic village beside XTBG. I love this place so much — the lush green forest, the fresh air, the chirping birds, the clear streams, the spicy Dai BBQ and my Dai culture and heritage.

However, with the backdrop of economic globalization, land conversion for rubber plantation here has pushed the beautiful rainforest far away from my home. So after leaving home to study Geography at Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou, I returned to my beloved Xishuangbanna to pursue my a PhD degree under the guidance of Professor Cannon, who happened to be starting a new research group in China when I was applying to be a student at XTBG. My research focuses on the sustainable development of Xishuangbanna and the interaction among natural resources, human decision-making and policy work on land use/cover change (LUCC).  The co-evolution between humans and their environmental landscape and how LUCC affects the future biodiversity in Xishuangbanna (as well as globally) is of great interest to me.

Research interests

My main research interest is ecological economics and sustainable development of rural areas. My current research focuses on: (1) incentive-based regulation, especially eco-compensation; (2) cost-effective expansion of crop monocultures; (3) environmental and social impacts of the pollutants from agriculture, especially pollutants from rubber factories; and (4) the design of institutions to promote conservation of ecosystem services and sustainable development.
